Called by Name | Identity – Beloved Sons and Daughters | 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time
In the Gospel, Jesus calls Simon and Andrew, then James and John:
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
In Part 3 of the Called By Name homily series, we’re reminded that this call did not happen in isolation. The Gospels suggest that Jesus had already encountered these men and drawn them into relationship. Their vocation grows out of that relationship—and so does ours.
Every baptized person is called to holiness. That universal call is then lived out in a particular way: through marriage, priesthood, or consecrated life. Whatever our state in life, following Jesus requires trust. Like the disciples, we are asked to let go of what we cling to and step forward—even when we don’t yet know where the path will lead.
The question for each of us is the same: What nets is the Lord asking me to drop?
